bnz41.

I read with an almost tiresome frequency of people looking for the ''Holy grail of optics'' that is a cheap scope/ bino's that will function as good as the top marques. Believe me............ THEY DO NOT EXIST. The Old adage 'you get what you pay for' is never more applicable when it comes to optics. And the irony is that you can buy some seriously good glass second hand, sometimes cheaper than what you would pay for inferior stuff new. It is often said that a Stalker will buy several pairs of bino's before he buys a good pair..... I was one of them. If you doubt what I say, then the next time you are shooting alongside someone who has an acknowledged quality scope mounted on his rifle, ask him if you can have a squint through his scope.

All sorted now. Bnz came home with a Hawke, not sure what one as I was on my way out. Looked OK for me though. As long as I can see the target with my glasses on I'm happy. :G Just waiting for one of our rifles to go so we can get my new one. :0037:

Hi,

Just my two-pennorth..........I heard all the arguments for spending as much on a scope as you'd spend on your rifle, but I guess it really boils down to what you're going to do with it.

For shooting at a black dot on a white background, I don't need expensive apochromatic glass, red green and blue lights built in, or reticules full of symbols/dots/lines. All I need is something solid enough to handle 308 recoil without falling to bits, that has simple cross hairs , a sharpish picture at both ends of the zoom, and big fat turrets that have the scales on elevation and windage that tell me how many clicks and turns I've put on. This is currently achieved with a Falcon Menace scope, made in China, cost £230.

On the other hand, these days, I don't shoot anything that has a mother, but if I WAS stalking deer, or hunting other critters, I'd want something that in addition to handling the recoil, could take clouting the odd tree or rock, being yanked through undergrowth, or falling in mud/wet grass etc., and that would give me a bright image in low light, and NEVER lose it's way. I'd want to reduce the chance of missing a first shot kill to the absolute minimum, so I'd be looking at spending at least 1-2K+...................
