Any calibre will be considered if its at least legal for roe. For roe deer, the bullet must weigh at least 50 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,000 foot pounds.

What about 6mmBR? I am always impressed by just how accurate that thing is, would that scrape in?

There are a lot of cartirdges to choose from. I suppose it depends on how different you want and how much you want to spend?

I guess the most cost effective choice would be the 22-250AI as you can fire form with standard 22-250 ammunition.

This looks interesting http://www.6mmbr.com/30BR.html but for deer, bullet choice would paramount to avoid too much meat damage (but you already know that .) I've used 125gn Nosler BT with good effect on Roe from my 308. So given the design parameters of the 30BR, it might be a good choice to start with.

It is unfortunate you cannot shoot 22-6,5x47 as it is tremendously accurate round with an 80 grain SMK and quite capable to any distance you choose to shoot,

True, but he could use the 75gn Swift Scirocco as it's designed for hunting or there's a couple 70gn bullets from Barnes, as well.

Edit: In Scotland a 22 centre fire is legal as long as it meets the parameters Scotsgun specified.

I'm with saddler, 7mm-08 Rem. Bullets from 120gn to 168 with a fast twist. Stacks of load data and can give superb accuracy which it has a reputation for.

I'm a big fan. I have one.

I've never really bothered the AI calibres. Is there a significant advantage over the original e.g. 6.5x55AI over 6.5x55 ?

In all honesty, it looks like all your bases are covered for hunting in Scotland (or the UK for that matter). I really can't think of anything that would be an improvement over anything in that list. If I was in your position, I'd be looking at an older wildcat that's possibly fallen out of favour (e.g. 6mm Remington) or something really new - just for the hell of it!

With the availability of 22-250 brass in Lapua now you could always rechamber for a heavier bullet which still keeps you as a 22-250. I still rate the 22-6,5x47 which is what the Viking shoots to great effect (30mm group at 650 yards earlier this year) I also like the idea of the old wildcats.

Ovenpaa, is there a decent site reviewing and covering reloading the calibre?
