In the days when I was a real Airfix nerd I used to paint in the soot marks behind each slot!!!

Of course it was only when replaced with these bad boys that it could actually do any real damage!
(This live-firing Hispano-Suez 20mm autocannon is on sale for the bargain price of $24,000!)
I had to laugh at how they all got in a trench and wore body armour and staked the barrel in place. You'd think they were detonating an atomic bomb not firing off a few rounds of .303.

The Spitfire was at its most beautiful as a Mk 1. Went down hill when they fitted nasty sticky out things like that Porcupine!!

I think the bubble canopy was a big improvement in the looks department.
But then I have never thought the Spitfire was an especially handsome aircraft. Give me a Mustang, Thunderbolt, Tempest or Sea Fury any day!

Its curvy trailing edges and its merlin engine give rise to its attractive maneuverability.
