Yes the wood being proud around the plate is correct as its one of the ways of checking of the wood has been sanded at any point
Thats interesting about the gap at the tab on the butt plate being separated from the wood as would happen when Mike fits his. From the photos it looks as though the screw holes won't align because of the angle of the tab isn't the same as the angle on the stock, am I reading this correctly Mike?
I've had dozens of No 4s through my hands over the years and just checked the four in my racks at present, they all have the tab inletted to and in contact with the butt so that it sits a tad under the wood.
Would this have been done after manufacture then?
