Being nice on the range costs nothing and can seriously pay dividends.
Agreed. If i see fellow club members, probationers or people on guest days for example showing an intrest in a particular gun i always encourage them to have a go.Today for example two probationers watched me loading my BP pistol so i had them shooting it.

The private I had to coach as he had never fired with iron-sights at all. I think the recoil of the .303 and the 7.92mm took him by surprise.

I guess it just comes down to what they're trained with and SA80's dont have iron sights.Does suprise me though because i would have thought it would have been the very basics of marksmanship.I bet he did enjoy shooting the 303 and 8mm because being old military calibres its his kinda neck of the woods.Keep your fingers crossed for a repeat performance where you can blaze away with an SA80!

According to the sergeant the recruits were originally taught nothing but shooting through SUSATs, but know all recruits are given SA80s with iron sights. Makes sense.

Here's hoping that they turn up again with their gear so we can play, but I wont hold my breath. Probably not allowed for civvies to play with assault rifles.

Maybe on a private range, but you might be exempt from the rule on MOD land? Fingers crossed either way! :good:

Glad it's not just me that thinks that way!

In fact I will not ask and these days I seldom shoot other peoples rifles if offered, I usually smile and say maybe in a bit or something equally non committal or it is something incredibly unusual/nice.

Salut,
Great story ! it sounds completly incredible that recruits are not taught to use iron sights

Un-fortuanately, our recruits are not taught with iron sights.
SUSAT only, non infantry units use the old iron sights on the SA80 but I am reliably informed that this is changing and ALL units will receive SUSAT
