I was really interested to see the comment that the MAS36 could be called the ultimate bolt action battle rifle. I haven't had any experience of the MAS36 but I was always of the view that the Lee Enfield No.4 would have that accolade rather than the MAS36, not least because of the speed of operation of the No.4's bolt. What is it about the MAS36 that would give it the edge?

When looking to design their new rifle after WW1 the frogs looked at all the military bolt action rifles in service and picked all the best features and packed them into the Mas 36.

Just like the Enfield the Mas bolt is rear locking making for a slick and quick action. The bolt handle position is perfect for making use of its rapidity of cycling.

The rifle has many cost effective and efficient features. Bolt strips without tools for example.

The only down side to the design as far as I can see is the five round magazine and the lack of adjustment on the fore sight, I find the rear sight an excellent and simple design.

There will be screeds about the rifle on this damned internet if you can be bothered to look, no doubt from yanque sites that think the only rifles in the world are Mauser actioned.

The Mas 36 is in no way a "modified" Mauser action and like the Enfield it has more than sufficient strength for its design cartridge.

Apparently not, it has a reserve on it !

This may be of common knowledge regarding the MAS 36 (it wasn't for me), but the windage on them is adjusted to the individual shooter via a number of rear sight peeps that move the zero through installing the correct peep. There is a chart that shows the number of the correct peep to move the zero to the desired point. I've purchased the correct rear sight leaf from surplus dealers here in the U.S. to properly zero whichever MAS 36 I had at the time. The MAS 36 sight is a good system because given a knob that can be turned, a soldier will eventually succumb to temptation and turn it, thus throwing the zero off!

The MAS was designed to be `soldier proof`, that's why the screws need a special tool to undo them.
Altering the tension of the lower barrel band will compromise accuracy, as will a loose fitting fore-stock which should `snap over centre` at about 15 degrees to the barrel and should not move when in position.
If either of these have been tampered, with, then it will be necessary to fire some rounds and adjust as you go until accuracy is restored.
The MAS 36 was a fine battle rifle, which could hold its own with any of its peers of the era.

Still if it pleases you, then a good rifle it is.

Maybe not your kind of rifle but you don't need to swear, let man savour his buy and not put him down. There are shooters out there who would jump at a chance to owning one of those, that's myself included!
