Nobody mentioned the biggest saving of all - use CAST boolits.

Pardon the iggerence !
Having only ever loaded 174 FMJBT ( ex Kranks) what options are there with the dreaded cast boolits ? How much can I tell the missus that I have saved ( always a source of brownie points :shifty: !) ?
Seriously though folks...... As the world is getting more expensive, any savings to allow more bangs would be welcome

Cast boolits are very reasonably priced and there are some good threads covering reloading with them. I turned a tapered mandrel to slightly flare the throat of the cases to prevent shaving any lead off but I am not sure that is so necessary at shortish distances as long as you take a bit of care with the bullet seating.
Dodgyrog is the purveyor of ex church roofs, erm cast boolits on this forum and is well worth a shout, hopefully he will pick this thread up very shortly.

Dodgyrog,
again, not wishing to seem like I've missed the boat/plot/thread ect....where are you? and have we a menu of your delicious lead morsels please?
Also, are cast boolits any use in 308 ( I'm not going very far, max would be 300 mtrs and only informal plinking rather than any competitions ) ? I would just like to find a reasonable and reliable source so that I can standardise.
Any help or advice would be gratefully received and hopefully absorbed :?

Hi Simong :)
I found this link posted by Dromia a while back:
http://www.full-bore.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=810
Also some questions to all please:
Other than cost, would there be any advantages to using cast boolits in an SMLE? Or any disadvantages?
In the link above, it quotes a load for a .303 170-180 grn boolit giving 1500-1600 fps - the powder is Hercules, which I know nothing of...what would be the equivilent in Vhit N140? or other Vhit powder?
What are the velocity limitations with .303 cast boolits? (I think I understand the gas checked thing :-P )

Advantages - easier to get a boolit to suit your rifle than a condom off the shelf one, you are in charge of quality control so ultimately greater accuracy. Cheaper. Another facet of reloading, boolit casters are the only handloaders who come near to making their own ammunition. A greater understanding of your rifle and its ballistics internal and external
Hercules is now Alliant. 2400 = VV N 110 or 120.
Velocity limitations, none if you get good boolit fit and a not too hard, malleable alloy

If you shoot cast boolits in a Lee enfield or a rifle with iron sights you will have to bear in mind that you will have to learn were your rifle shoots. The sight settings will be different to a full metal jacket load.
