The rule of thumb I was given for Airsoft guns is use the original parts until something breaks then replace broken part with an upgrade.
If you've used it often enough to break it the upgrade is worthwhile.

There aren't any restrictions on simple ownership, anyone* can own/use them for any lawful purpose. The Violent Crime Reduction Act brought in various offences but they only applicable to the sale, import or manufacture of them.

*I'm not sure if S21 of the 1968 Act applies to blank firers or not, but i'm guessing you've never been in the big house so it doesn't really matter!
