That is kind of you Simon but its a set of dial calipers I'm after as I can't read the vernier anymore, unless thay are a braile set. :?

Adam I can recommend a good eye surgeon I dont wear glasses any more except for reading.
All my shooting is now done with out specs I can see better than I ever could even with iron sights and my scores are going up.
Go see a good optician and get a thorough eye examination may be its cataracts you are the right age.LOL

Seriously though I have been carrying out some tests using a good quality dial caliper a vernier and a mitutoyo digital imperial caliper.
I am well aware how dificult it can be to struggle with failing eye sight the vernier caliper is accurate but I can see how you may struggle.
The dial caliper you need to zero each time you use it it is not easy to read in fact it is easier to read a good quality vernier than it is a dial gauge I dont understand why you would want to use either one of these they are not as accurate as the mitutoyo.
The mitutoyo is self calibrating it is very very accurate and very easy to read there really is no contest.
Oh and I tried a Lyman dial gauge rubbish I threw it in the bin.

Batteries, I never trust anything with batteries.

I know the limitations of the Lyman that is why I'm looking for something better. its not as good as my vernier which I now have difficulty reading.

So the Mitutoyo digitals are better than the Moore & Wright ones?

OK, to try and make sense of what has been said I'll repose the question.

If you had up £125 to spend on each measuring instrument which make and model of the following would you buy?

1. Micrometer - Vernier - Imperial

2. Micrometer - Digital - Imperial

3. Caliper - Dial - Imperial

4. Caliper - Digital - Imperial

Could you also could state which supplier you would buy it from please.

I would look at Mitutoyo, choose the models I wanted and Google them for the best price. I have used Amazon in the past as they have some keen prices and I always check that well known Auction site and https://www.easupplies.com/ are worth a look as well.

One oddity with the Mitutoyo digital micrometers is not all of them have an off switch, I have to replace the battery in mine once per year.

They also do vernier and dial calipers metric/imperial.
The digital one I use mostly is cd-6" CSZ approx £85
Also check out dial caliper series 505 6"505-717 approx £76-90
You could buy both for £161.90
My guess is if you did you would find your self using the digital ones more than the dial caliper but have a look on there web site they make quality stuff.
