I have to try a couple! When you dice them do you fillet them or leave the bones in? I ask because the Viking will need to know when she prepares them..

For frying it's ok to leave the bones in, for stew bones out.

I would probably eat anything if my survival depended on it.

However when it does not...
Don't know about squirrel, isn't it too much like a rat?

But then again, would you eat a rat?

Christel, as you say if survival depends on it. I've never eaten rat so I can't compare the two but squirrel is tasty.

Squirrel is great to eat! I cook the back and haunches together in a casserole, bones in. I find it tastes a bit like wild rabbit. It is also good roasted over a fire on a stick. And as for eating rat, my wife ate it in Africa and found it fine. Perceptions can be strange sometimes, until things are viewed with the light of experience: I used to be fairly non-plussed by sea food, till I lived in China, and had to eat sharks stomach lining, raw crab guts and live prawns (they wriggle horribly on the tongue before you bite the head off!). Turtle shell and entrail are both particularly unappetising, but unavoidable at certain chinese banquets. After that, I love fish! Fillets of any fish taste tremendous in comparison.

So basically squirrel is really good.....unless all you eat is fillet steak and/or McDonalds!!

Yes, Ive eaten squirrel. Had it in with rabbit in a pie I made out in the bush. Skin is bloody tough, but the meats quite nice. Think next time I would spit it, or slow cook it though. Certainly not red though. There's more than enough of the grey's to scoff!
