I've taken the bird cage off by just inserting empty mag for stability in the magwell and then holding the rifle between my legs. Did 3 rifles like that when squad mates wanted to fit the muzzle brakes they had just bought at the Pro-Am. Wouldn't be wanting to apply pressure to the mag well or mar the finish on the barrel with something else. It will be tight though as has been said so that it is timed correctly.
