Very nice bradaz cheers It's got the more desired rear sight.

With regards to your cast loads, may I remind you of my thread in which case I tested Bullseye and Accurate #2 powders. To get on paper at 25m you will most likely have to put your sight up to the 300 yard setting.

Removing the action from the stock is easy, you just loosen (but don't remove) the front barrel band and pull it toward front sight but don't remove, the upper handguard can now be removed. Loosen the screw at the rear of the receiver to allow you to remove it from the stock. I would highly recommend the use of grease instead of oil for lubricating the action and bolt as it lasts much longer and stays in place. I originally tried a standard 3-in-1 gun oil but found that it didn't last long! The American's would have used Mobil Red syntethic lubricant, but I used Redline CV2 grease. You only need to apply a thin layer, if the grease still appears red then you've put too much on. I applied it with a cotton bud and only used enough to cover a fingernail to grease the entire rifle.

You'll have a great time shooting it :D

thanks, i'll have a look for your post

nice tip on the grease, I've just bought a case of top 2000 super longtime grease for work, so I'll try that on it first.

thanks, so are you still using bullseye or did you swap to n140?

I have some of the 115gr cast RN bullets from shellhouse, these look to be the same design as those from ACE/hannams.

what shape did you settle on? and what sort of FPS do you get? I'll be limited to 1735 FPS with 475 Ft/lbs of energy for 25 / 40 yrds. which means I have a speed cap of about 1350FPS to stay under the energy

100 yrds is pretty much unlimited. so I may have to be buying some FMJ or plated off mag41

Err, I wouldn't use N140, bit too slow a powder ;) (I'll give you benefit of the doubt that you were thinking of my recent Mosin thread...).

For my indoor cast loads I have stuck with Accurate #2 powder, aka Lovex D032 as I find Bullseye powder stings my eyes and leaves my mouth and nose feeling dry after shooting. There is no unpleasantness when using Accurate/Lovex powder. My range has velocity limitations for 115gr bullets at 1,350fps so I aimed to keep my velocity under that for cast loads. I haven't got around to testing Dodgyrog's bullets just yet, so I have only tried the RNFP, but thanks for the reminder!

I haven't updated my thread yet (due to Mosin fun!), but I have since shot some groups using Hodgdon H110 powder with both the 110gr plated H&N bullets and the 110gr S&B FMJ bullets. I didn't find the accuracy to be spectacular with the plated bullets, talking about a 1 foot group at 100m with this powder; I had much better results with the Reload Swiss RS30 powder. Per my thread, using 14.0gr of RS30 powder with the plated bullets gave similar accuracy results to H110 with the S&B jacketed bullets but did have a lower velocity. Bear in mind that 14.0gr of RS30 is a compressed load as the powder is quite bulky powder, and I think this powder is maybe a little too slow for this calibre.

To Summarise

Using RS30 with 110gr H&N bullets (overall length around 1.680");
  1. 14.0gr gave average velocity of 1,836fps with std dev of 21fps (n=10), grouping around 6"
Using Hodgdon H110 with 110gr S&B FMJ (overall length 1.680"):
  1. 14.6gr gave average velocity of 2,004fps with std dev of 23.9fps (n=20), grouping around 6"
  • 15.0gr gave average velocity of 2,054fps with std dev of 26.5fps (n=19), grouping around 6"
The bullets that mag41 are the exact same plated bullets from H&N that I have used. They are marginally cheaper than jacketed rounds so will be great for plinking.

Sorry, I meant n340, not 140!

I know what you mean about eye sting, I get that with trueblue in 9mm out of my lever release. I remember struggling to find D032 a while ago, wonder if i'll be able to find any now?

as for the fullbore stuff, I don't have anything apart from n140 (yes, I do mean 140 this time :p) so whatever happens I will need something new

Strange, I hadn't noticed it when I used True Blue in my .357 (then again, I haven't shot it in a while so maybe I need a refresher!).

Another couple of powders with similar burn-off velocities as D032 are Reload Swiss RS12 and Vihtavuori N320.

No published load data so I would highly recommend consulting QuickLoad to determine a good starting load. Let me know if you don't have access to this as I will do a check for you tonight.
