There's a lot of confusion about the term "SCAN". It's not about chamber-pressure but dimentions. Vihtavuori made reloading data specifically for the scandinavian Sauer 200 STR shooters. This has also been included in their english written reloading manual and creates a lot of confusion.

Back in 1893, the norwegian – swedish caliber commission agreed on a common caliber and cartridge for both countrys armys. The idea was that norwegian and swedish ammo should be interchangeable. Then there’s the old story about the swedish officer, who during a trip to Norway, bought a Krag and some ammo. Back in Sweden, he also tried the ammo in his Mauser, and it wouldn’t chamber. This created a big fuzz in Sweden, and the rumour sayd that the norwegians had cheated them and made ammo that would not work in swedish rifles. The swedes even made a commite to investigate the matter. The verdict were that the norwegian chambers were close to the max. of the agreed specs., while the swedish chambers were close to the minimum. Some swedish Mausers needed a heavier push on the bolt to close with norwegian ammo, but the difference were deemed to be insignifficant.

Later, when the Sauer 200 str, was introduced as standard target rifle for the scandinavian countries, the 6,5 x 55 skan was introduced as a new attempt to standardize the ammunition. The skan chamber should be a compromise between the norwegian and the swedish chambers. I think all new target barrels from around 1990 and onwards has Skan chambers.

Good afternoon

I think I am now the proud owner of this very rifle (can't imagine there are two to exactly that spec!). I've been doing some searching about the differences (if any) between "plain" 6.5 x 55 and 6.5 x 55 SKAN and I'm still confused. What is the current opinion on whether there are any meaningful differences between the two? The rifle shoots extremely well as expected, but I want to make sure I'm first not doing anything potentially hazardous and second whether I'm getting the best out of it.

I have a set of RCBS dies described on the box as "6.5MMX55 SWED MAU"; I have both a full-length and neck sizing die. Are these suitable for, or indeed best for, this calibre?

Thanks, I've had another read of that post - seems it should be OK to use "SE" dies to reload for a SKAN-chambered rifle then?
