Excellent. Although I'd want a slip on stock cover as the last one I fired bruised my shoulder. That all metal stock is not friendly![edit] Is it a metal plate stock on that one? If you don't mind my asking the price?

I have my eye on one that is ~£300 and in ok condition.

The 303 isn't as bad as the 8mm Mauser so should be quite tame on the recoil. Just make sure you're really getting a good shoulder position with the rifle.

All Enfield's come with a metal butt plate. The standard butt plate was brass but some replacement butt plates are black steel type. I was looking for a spare brass butt plate for 6months, finally found one on eBay.

Agree, that the .303 shouldn't really be a shoulder bruiser, well not a standard No.4 at any rate.

Funnily enough, I'm in need of a black steel butt plate!

Have a go with a Jungle Carbine, I certainly noticed the increase in kick when I got mine.

I love my No.5.

But it did kick like a mule when I first got it.....but it was fitted with a 'S' short butt.
Buy very lucky chance though, I had a rare 'L' long butt for a No.5 with a slightly better condition rubber butt pad, and after swapping over, the kick was noticeably reduced, and it's now a joyous thing to fire.

I have always wanted a No5 and have shot them in the past however never found one at the right time.

My favourite Enfield is a true post war No1 Mk3 sporter with express sights and a 5 round magazine. It seems a bit odd to have a magazine cut-off on a sporting rifle however that is the way they came. I can only assume BSA had a load of unused No1 Mk3 actions left over when the MoD went to the No1 Mk3* and they sat on the shelf until the 1920's when they used them to create the sporter. It can be quite spiteful to shoot with a 180 grain round however it is a delight and accurate as well with 150 grain oft nosed Sierra Gamekings.

I think it's the brass butt plate/screw that caused the bruise tbh. My 12g is very light and the recoil is on par, but that stock is just wood. I don't think it helped that I was bench resting it with a bad back, so possibly overcompensating to try and protect that. Makes sense?

I was using some el cheapo PPU 174gr ammunition, still felt pretty cheeky though!

[edit] I also want to try the Jungle Carbine they have, and choose between them. Or maybe just get both!

Very nice, genuine No.5's with decent barrels are certainly getting harder to find now.
