The humble 22-250 versus a 20,0mm steel plate

Some of the most hideous damage I have seen was the after effects of HEAT rounds and finned on the Iraqi T54/55s and 62s etc.

HEAT looks quite innocuous, just like someone got busy with a cutting torch until you consider that the inside of the wagon would have been over pressured enough to crush just about anything squishy and laced with vaporised copper/steel.

FSAPDS....usually just trashes everything and takes the lid off. As far as I know I never saw the aftermath of DU FSAPDS, least ways I hope not

During my gunnery science lessons back in the 80s we were constantly reminded that we had in essence gone full circle back to the crossbow bolt....not wrong really, although they are still using HESH on older AFVs

You know, snayperskaya, if you were of an artistic bent, you could group several 7.62x54R impacts close together, paint the metal ejecta in bright colours with a yellow centre, entitle the resulting artwork "Fireflowers" and submit it for the £100,000 Turner Prize. It's got to be in with as good a chance as Tracy whats'ername's unmade bed...

If I chucked a few hundred empty 54r cases and empty PKM belts on the floor and called it "The End" it would be more like "art" than Tracy P#ssedup-whats'ernames unmade bed!!!.

This would be an interesting conversation piece to have sat in the living room, the piece of armour plate is 6" thick and from a German Tiger 1 and the AP shell is a 17-pdr.Although the shell didn't penetrate fully I don't suppose the spalling would have done the crew much good!.......

I've fired the similar slightly larger AP Shot from a 25Pdr Gun at Sennybridge. They had a tracer in the base, when it hit the backstop hill the tracer would take off vertically, now, was it just the tracer or the whole shell? Nobody could tell me..

Think, a 20Lb Tungsten Shell at 1,800 fps. Can any body work out the Ft Lbs

Remember even the muzzle blast was fearsome, blew the Adjutant clean off his feet when he foolishly went too near the muzzle to retrieve his hat.

You have to fee a bit for those poor conscripts when a hellfire drops in therough the turret! Seems they were using "concrete filled" bombs in Iraq?? The shock of "X" amount of concrete at "Y" FPS was enough to do the job.

Anyway - although it's all fascinating stuff we need to get back on topic chaps.

I tried a similar thing just yesterday. We had some 12 mm thick disks at approximately 150 yards hit them with some 50 grain 22-250 and 139 grain 6.5mm soft points. They were close to getting through with large raised bumps on the reverse. If soft points do that we need to upgrade our plate targets to Hardox or AR500. A 220 swift might go through.

Welcome to the forum Shaun, I also shoot 129 grain Interlocks in 6,5x47 and they are impressive against steels as are 123 Scenars...

I wouldn't mind giving the 220 a go! Seen a few varmint barrelled Rugers for sale in 220 Swift which have come close, but not quite, to tempting me.


This thread reminded me that I this piece of 4mm plate lying about from a few years ago -

Penetration from 120gn A Max bullets fired from a 6.5x55 @ about 2600fps from a distance of 100m.

The impact at the top centre of the is from a 168gn A Max subsonic fired from 25m. The reverse view of the plate below -
