Re: Taurus .357 LBR Hand Loading

I can confirm that 2.8gr > 3.5gr were useless at 25 yards (bench rested).

The 3.6gr load started to tighten up (although dirty) and the 3.7gr load was better (with a clean case).

A point to note is that my SA trigger is pretty poor whilst DA is actually quite good. All our shooting is pretty much all DA so didn't really pick up on this until I tried a colleagues identical gun (That never happened Officer, that's outrageous, egregious, preposterous and beneath further comment!).

I have sourced an after-market Wolff spring kit which may (or may not) improve trigger function.

This is the thread that brought me to the forum ....

Being new to the Taurus LBR, having bought a 38/357 a couple of weeks ago my experience is as follows:
1. Nice!
2. Good fun.
3. Not very accurate but I think it can be improved ....

When I bought it I also bought 500 rounds of Magtech 'cowboy action loads' .38spl and got busy with a bit of practice. I found I was getting a 3" grouping at 15m and 4"ish at 25m but the sights were miles out. Once I reloaded using GM 158gr RNFP and 4.9gr Unique the groupings went to s*** although I could hit chest sized targets at 50m & 100m 3/10 times!

Along with a mate who is a very experienced shooter and who also bought the same Taurus to match his .44 Taurus at the same time, I then reloaded more rounds with 4.6gr of Unique powder and magically my accuracy returned to the same as the factory load. After speaking to a few more people it seems that these guns are very sensitive to both bullet shape and load and for reasons I cannot yet fathom, it can be accurate at 25m on a lighter load but useless at 50m/100m but with a heavier load it will be great at 100m and all over the place at 25m!

I've ordered some jacketed SWC and GM lead truncated cone (both at 158gr for comparison and that will work well in the underlever as well) and will try them at 4gr, 4.5gr & 5gr and see how they go but my research has also dug up the idea that a lighter bullet with a bigger charge may be more accurate yet.

My best so far is 3" at 25m standing using GM lead RNFP with 4.6gr unique powder. All comments and suggestions gratefully accepted and I'll report back next week once I've played a bit more ...
