To be honest Tovarisch Badger I have never seen that type of dropcase before, it certainly doesn't look Russian.The Soviet Mosin dropcase is a simpler canvas affair with "apron strings" to tie it up and has its own sling attached.Is the one in the pic Finnish by any chance?, or indeed a Mosin one at all?.

Definitely not Russian, my money would be on one of the Balkan countries.I would hazard a guess that 792 may refer to the caliber of the rifle, I know the Yugoslavians liked their 7.92mm rifles.
