Could it be that the 18mm dovetail is manufacturer specific ie TIKKA?

Why not just buy some Weaver/Picatinney rings? Plenty out there...http://opticswarehouse.co.uk/product-ca ... _width=200

I think you are right the 18mm rings are probably for the Tikka range.
The rails are the same size spacing as a standard picatinny rail. I guess the thing to do as you suggest is to buy some rings.

I did some checking on the net they are Tikka rings which is a shame because I don't own a Tikka. wallhead 8-)

I have ordered some rings.
I have had a read up I think I understand now. Some rings are designed to fit dovetails on the rifle actions. You can not normally buy dovetail rails all though there are adaptors.
If you fit a picatinny/weaver rail you need dedicated rings. Once the rings arrive I should be able to fit the bits up and I will have a better idea of what it's going to look like. I discovered that they make a dedicated rail for the Mauser 98 action all though they are not cheap. So one of them might work better. We will see. What I don't want is for this project to end up costing a arm and a leg. It's supposed to be a cheap and cheerful jobbies.

Here you can see the base mounting plate.

This is the original mounting plate and the new machined base that will be altered to fit the scope rail to. I was originaly planning on selling the rear sight and I may well do that if the scope mount works. But for now I will hang on to it.

Out of interest do you know what the angles are (in degrees) at the back?

OK, it looked a bit shallower to me which is what caught my eye. I always think it a nuisance to set the mill just for two cuts, or more to the point to tram it back in afterwards however it can always be done with a Sine bar or dividing head or even a tilt vice although they are a bit sketchy

Its great having a MILL a LATHE and a small workshop to potter about in. I sorted the scope rail out. I finished modifying the new base but I did not like the look of it all though it will work. Might look better anodised. So I went to plan B I used the original rear sight mount and modified a rail to fit on the original mount it looks much better. I got a set of rings so we are nearly there I am going to fit it up to morrow and see how it looks. If I am happy with it I will shoot it. If all goes well then Ill move on to the stock and the barrel and receiver.
