I'm currently on a section 7, and have been for a couple of weeks, which means I can't buy ammunition. Luckily I reload, but I'm not 100% sure where that leaves me.
i might be wrong but I thought a section 7 covers you for possession only, not use! So if you have match cards to shoot, a place on the Olympic squad or just enjoy your legally owned possessions, tough!
You should first of all make a complaint to your police and crime commissioner. This is not acceptable service! Just how much work is entailed in taking information from one bit of paper and putting it on another? They go on about how much "work" is involved, but most of that is not only completely unnecessary but what they have created for themselves. Like the home "in"security visit; the law doesn't require it, it is of doubtful legality under the Bill of Rights and the Human rights act, and even if it did why do it more than once?
Just imagine if the administration staff in the rest of the police service were as bad; sorry you will have to let that murderer go because we wont be able to type up the statements or any other paperwork for 3 months.

If you are a member of an approved club then you have an exemption.
"Members of a rifle club, miniature rifle club or muzzle-loading pistol club approved by the
Secretary of State or the Scottish Ministers may, without holding firearm certificates, have
in their possession firearms and ammunition when engaged as members of the club in, or
in connection with, target shooting (section 15(1) of the 1988 Act as amended by section
45 of the 1997 Act). It should be noted that section 15(1) does not stipulate that the
firearms must be club firearms. "

Yesterday Surrey quoted 2 to 3 weeks for a variation.
A few weeks ago they quoted 2 to 3 weeks (from visit) for a grant. It arrived between 2 and 3 weeks later.

That seems slow for Surrey, I've had two variations since December and each one took less then a week from posting the form to receiving the new cert. I even had my EFP within
three days of emailing them.
I hope they're not changing, they've been really good up to now.

My application for a grant went in start of December, doctor contacted end of February (24th) I handed the letter from doctor back yesterday, all other checks as far as I know have been done, so waiting on my verdict now. 4-5 months was what I was expecting but told 6 weeks by Plod when I handed in my application.

Would it not simplify thinks if one-for-one variations could be done by RFDs?, especially if the calibre is the same. The police could still be notified as they are now but no need to send certificate in for weeks......or am I missing something?.
