Re: How to measure rings for a Picatinny Rail

You might have a hard time finding a dovetail rail to fit a particular rifle. Picatinny/weaver rails are plentiful and there are many manufacturers that make rings to fit that rail. If you did happen to buy a dovetail rail then the choice of rings is very limited, Warne is the only company I can think of off the top of my head that make rings to suit different dovetail sizes.

I'm not sure which rifle you intend to buy the rail for but have a look at the Tier one website below as they offer standard rails for a wide variety of receiver models. Recknagel are another company that make rails however I'm not sure how many different rifles they make rails for.

I'd recommend using a picatinny/weaver rail and suitable rings for the reason that there is a lot of choice out there should you need it. If you moved from a 1" tube diameter scope to a 30mm tube diameter scope then you still have lots of options for scope rings that may be inexpensive. I know that the dovetail specific mounts can be quite expensive. I have 4 rifles that use weaver rings on picatinny rails, and one rifle that uses 11mm dovetails (CZ 452 .22lr). Hope this helps.

Cheers thank you for your input I think I understand now. I guess the way forward is to buy a picatinny/weaver rail plus a set of matching rings and forget about the dovetail thing.

Just when I thought I had it sorted it rears its ugly head again. I have acquired another a Schmidt and bender Police marksmen11.
(I wish people would stop doing this they are more trouble than they are worth as far as I am concerned.)
I want to fit it to a rifle any rifle will do its a 34mm tube all my rifles have dove tail mounts. I'm so confused with this business. I'm looking for a dove tail to pick a thingy they all seem to be 11mm. The only rifle I have with a pick a thingy mount is the Schultz and Larsen target rifle I have just modified. I have a .222 I have just purchased but I don't want to put it on that a bit of overkill I think. Id like to put it on a Tikka 6.5x55 but it has a dovetail. I never had this chew on with any of my milsurps rifles. Argggggggggggh. wallhead wallhead

If you want to mount this on your Tikka, then buy the following:

http://warnescopemounts.com/product/221 ... ium-rings/

Buy the rail made for the Tikka T3 and the Warne mounts should fit onto that rail with no problems. I've put picatinny rails on all my rifle's which have their own proprietary dovetail systems because it can be difficult (if not pricey) to find dovetail rings which take tubes other than 1" or 30mm.

I had a rummage I have three sets of Tikka rings and some others that I think with a bit of tinkering and swapping of bits will allow me to fit the scope to the 6.5x55. My only concern now is the height of the rings. The scope tube is 34mm with a 50mm diameter what ever you call the front piece of glass. Would you normally use high rings for one of these monsters.

It is called the objective lens and I would say high rings as medium usually get you to around 45mm Objective.
