With some cast bullets and fast pistol powder you can have them running equivalent to a warm .38. But the thing with is the recoil impulse may feel the same, it's exaggerated by the fact there is more blast from the firing. Not sure why that is, perhaps a smaller bore size in relation to cartridge, but it could be s consideration.

excellent, one shop seems to have 38's, 30-30 and 32-20's so I guess any of them are going to be viable. apart from the 44mags as she has said that kicks too hard for her atm

I shoot a Winchester 94 30-30 and it is a delight with a moderate load and 150 grain cast bullets and very accurate. Certainly the Viking commented on how soft it is to shoot. Dodgyrog has sent me some Loverin cast bullets which I will be trying shortly.

I have a 38/357 Winchester trapper AE94. The barrel is 16" long its light and easy too use and shoots as fast as you can work the action. Its ideal for a young lady. Aperture sights and scope bases are readily available for them. Not sure if Winchesters are still readily available its a long time since I bought any kind of under lever. Another consideration would be the availability of ammo I guess unless you re load of course.

.32/20 makes for a heavier rifle - same outer barrel diameter but a smaller hole down the middle. It's a pussy cat to shoot though.

I'd recommend a Marlin 1894 and lead 38 special with low weight lead bullets. If you load them to gallery range velocities the recoil is negligible.

thank you for all the idea's guys. I have found a shop showing a nice choice of underlevers for sale in Nottingham, so will probably go up there for a good browse.
my wallet would prefer that she didnt take a liking to an old Marlin, but if she does, she does. getting her shooting is more important than the cost of the gun
