It is always worth looking through the lead flashing sections in places like B&Q, lead prices fluctuate so rolls are individually priced. I've had some really good bargains there as scabby rolls tend to go to the bottom and it is worth raking through them and checking the prices you might be lucky, I usually am.

I also have another guaranteed source of cheap lead but I'm not telling you.

A bit of lead mining eh!

Usually a fair bit on ebay, though by the time postage is included you'd probably be somewhere around the £2/kg mark.

Out of curiousity what would people say a good price for scrap lead is per kg?

If you must pay for it then 10/- per lb is about right for scrap.

My local scrap yard will sell some scrap lead but it's a pain in the backside, choose you lead pay by cheque and collect once your cheque as cleared

The cheapest on evil bay works out at £2.58 per kg posted. However he will combine the postage for larger amounts.

Beware ! Modern wheel balancing weights are now made of zinc metal. Any slight trace of this in your molten mix, either pure lead or alloy can ruin the pouring qualities and hence the bullets. If anyone suffers from insomnia I can provide a more detailed answer.

Actually the odd zinc wheel weight in a 40 pound melt isn't a problem the alloy will tolerant some. However after that it turns the melt into lumpy porridge, if that does happen then the mix can be cleaned with a copper bearing substance like copper sulphate.

Never bother with wheel weights nowadays as life is too short to sort them and they are predominately zinc or iron nowadays anyway, I have around 12 cwt of cleaned wheel weights in my stash so that should see me out.
