This is making me realize how rusty I am! If you are only concerned with the load on the spring and the thickness of the spring, then the maths simplifies to keeping the ratio of the load to the cube of the thickness constant. If you wanted to half the load, you half the cube of the thickness.

I am not sure how clear the above is: lets look at an example:
If the spring was 1/8" thick and you want to half the effort to full cock, then cube the 1/8 giving 1/512. Divide that by two giving 1/1024. The cube root of 1/1024 is pretty close to 1/ 10 so reducing the thickness to a tenth of an inch and then polishing should do it.
