I'm not 100% positive that being a member for a day would help your cause on asking for a variation.
Pretty sure you have to have been a member of a club for a certain amount of time before you could be seen as suitable for a variation in something specific to that club.
As I say, not 100% sure if its the same for a variation, but it's pretty strict when it comes to it for FAC grants that you've been a full member for a reasonable amount of time...

It's not quite the same thing with F4i or UKPSA, and given the OP already has an FAC (Implied by the variation) then he's either already a member of a home office approved club, or has FAC courtesy of permissions / own land etc - then in all probability the F4i / UKPSA is to meet whatever insurance type requirements the FAC will be conditioned with and I'd imagine to help support "good reason" as being able to demonstrate membership of an organisation that promotes the sport and organises matches.

Assuming said OP is already a member of a HO approved club, then there's nothing in law requires him or her to be a member of another club for any amount of time for any other category of firearm they desire. Any insistance by any Force of such a requirement is just another example of making it up and making things harder for no good reason.

I haven't ever looked into it. but most clubs that I've found require you to at least do some sort of probation and make sure you are safe before considering you a full member. Quite surprised that F4i just give you full membership on the back of a payment, if I'm honest.

EDIT: Though as I write this, I seem to recall the NRA do something similar...

The NRA do give you full membership if you already have an FAC, otherwise it is probationary membership. I just wish the NRA allowed you to apply for membership online rather than sending everything by the post. I am hoping to go on a regional RCO course but need to use snail mail to send the NRA membership application first.
