The value of unfired or just unissued No4 MK2's have risen in recent years especially late in the production line e.g.. 1955. I was shocked to hear it myself because I own one, but whether you like it or not, that is the case.

I spoke to a well known and respected dealer in the UK recently, he only deals with Lee Enfields, and he said unissued and unfired rifles in mint condition are now retailing at £2000, just unissued but fired and in excellent condition are about £1500. To illustrate this point and completely independently to this I was happily shooting away with mine recently and was offered £1200 on the spot by another club member and he couldn't have been more willing to put his cash in my pocket. I said no because it wasn't for sale at the time. His offer made me query the dealer on it's current value and if I had sold at £1200, believe it or not, he'd have got a good deal by a few hundred quid at todays market value. However battered and used can still be picked up for £400-500.

Should the market change in the future, who knows, but that's the price the mint condition ones are going for today.

Wow - the prices for SMLE's over there are REALLY high! That surprises me -what with that being the place of origin etc etc. Figuring in the currency exchange, you're paying somewhere about double, or a bit more, than the market will bear over 'ere. I just sold a Very Good condition No. 5 Mk 1 Carbine, all original, 1944 manufacture, for about 175 UK Pounds.

The S.M.L.E. is the W.W.1 era, No.1 Mk.111, a.k.a. Short Magazine Lee Enfield

The No.4 is the W.W.2 era Lee Enfield

You yanquis do tend to shove ALL Lee Enfields under the SMLE umbrella...it's very naughty, so please let the rest of them on that side of the pond know as well please or we'll take your toys away & give all their land back to the Indians

.....then exported to the states in the hundreds of thousands after the war. The supply of mint condition examples from within the UK are rare. But I'm assuming the demand is still there. Mine is stamped CAI ST ALB VT on the barrel which shows it was imported by Century Arms International in the states at some point in the past. It then flew back to the UK to meet the demand of target shooters/collectors for unfired Lee Enfields. Go on gunbroker.com and maybe you could pick up a mint condition one in the states at a reasonable price. Might even be worth UK shooters buying there then importing themselves.

Holy smoke .... very expensive rifles, since when were K98's so much money, they used to be cheap milsurps in the good old days!

£575 seems like a lot of money for a Parker Hale No4 conversion, £500 for the scope and £75 for the rifle perhaps..

I have a hankering for a .303, either a SMLE or a No4.
Couldn't believe the prices when I started looking.

I'll hang around to grab one of those couple of hundred quid ones that pop up now and again
