I remember the ROC station at the Doll being equipped with them in the 1960s.

They were also just a large banger that we used to use them in rep for loud reports, we used to set them off in a large metal ash can with chicken mesh over the top. The ash can would only last about a dozen shows before it would split.

ok, so the first example is more akin to a firework then?

the 2nd is more what i've seen, I have small electric triggered maroons at home, that i used for airsoft, wired to remote control detonators, to replictate IED's etc. all it is, is a bang, any players within a certain distance are then 'hit'

It's definitely not a flare - I carry one of these for that - it fires a double bright red flare after climbing about 150 feet:

AFAIK this type of cartridge is legal in the UK - they are used for scaring birds on airfields/airports for example. Similar 12g rounds are fired from a 37mm Flare Pistol using a 12g adapter, but also from a 12g shotgun.

With regards to "bird fright" ammunition - I've seen that being used in yacht races in Australia.

As far as flares are concerned - It's not plain sailing in the UK with firearms licensing. If someone could clarify that would be welcome.

They did in the old days; My mate was a lighthouse keeper's son and we got the 'out of date' Rocket Maroons for November the 5th fun. Went up a 1000 ft or so then a huge effing BANG! :D

I was told by a military colleague that battle simulations/maroons (for CBRN use) were so loud that they were only permitted to be used on a training ground in Poland. I don't know how much truth there is in that.

Definitely a bird-scaring cartridge. Somebody has just cleverly repackaged it for a new market. We get ours from a UK company called Primetake.

That company looks like it makes some very interesting products to say the least, no doubt many of which are restricted to LE or military only :bad: lol

Yes indeed, they do make some interesting stuff.
