What you need Comrade is a PO 3-9x42 or a PO 4-12x42 1pn21 pancratic zoom scope.The 4-12 version is a lot rarer than the 3-9, both are calibrated for a 150gr round and with both the zoom setting corresponds to range in 100s' of metres, so if your target is 600m away for example you turn the zoom to "6" and aim dead on.These scopes are available if you are prepared to search about a bit, my PO 4-12x42 came off the marketplace forum on AKfiles.com.Below is a pic of my original late 60s PSO-1 (which has beautifully clear optics, a 1.7m rangefinder and a fully functioning IR Detector) and the PO 4-12x42 1pn21.

How the zoom/range function works


While these scopes are ideal for somewhere like Sennybridge with multiple targets at different ranges they are not really suited for shooting at one set distance due to the way they function.

So I've had another think - and whilst I do fancy a 1pn21 - it isn't going to fit the bill.

Given that the range is "dialled" up on the scope, when I set it to circa 675 metres (for where the pillbox target is on F range) then the magnification is also going to be around 6.75 - which is marginally better than my 6x42 scope - but does absolutely nothing in real terms for me not being able to see where the round hits so I can adjust fire accordingly.

If you'll recall from the first post, I can't clearly see at 6x at ~675 meters the fall when hit plate in the "pillbox" window - through a 20x-60x power spotting scope (even at 20x) I can see it clearly to calculate holdover / scope adjustments, but the requirement is for a scope with BDC for 54R such that I don't need a spotter and can see where my own shots fall.

The trouble with the 1pn21 is the automatic BDC and dialling the distance in dictates the power at a given distance - so whilst it's fun, it's not going to help much.

Maybe a fixed power POSP 10x42 with BDC is the way to go, or a 1P59 in 3-10x (again BDC) if I can find one. I think there might be some 4-12x42's knocking about also.......
