Thanks 1066 for you post - it was most helpful.

Yes, the chamber etc is clean. The bolt is very smooth without a case or dummy round in and closes with ease. I have read that Lapua cases are very slightly too big for the savage chamber and benefit from running through a small base full length sizer die. I have order one of these from Spud 1967 and will see if it makes a difference. However, I think that you are right and a lot of the resistance could be linked to the make-up of the bolt itself.

I'm sure you'll enjoy shooting it once you've got it settled down. There's plenty of bullets to choose from and it's an easy cartridge to load for. :)

Try covering the new empty case with a black felt pen, then chamber it and eject - see where the ink has rubbed off. It will tell you if the base is too big.

I know one or two shooting Savage 6BR in benchrest competition and all are using Lapua brass. I've never heard any of them comment as you have.

There is also a modification you can make to Savage bolts to reduce the effort on the bolt open and close.

Yes, an easy mod to reduce friction. This is usually done with the head of a .38 pistol case and a small ball bearing in the primer pocket. Makes the bolt much smoother. The Savage bolt cocks on the up stroke and often receives criticism for being stiff to lift, especially when shooting from a bench with bags. A little polishing makes it a lot smoother.

Here's the mod I made for my Savage's:
