I just use a wire thickness gauge they are about a fiver.

I don't take any notice of the numbers on the gauge. If I'm not happy with the vernier gauge reading I just use it to get the diameter then measure the gap for the amount of cast I do two rifles may be three I can work it out. I could use V blocks Iv plenty of them but I'm not that fussed. My rifles are pretty standard jobs Adam shoots all kind of exotic stuff so he needs to do his home work.
I have slugged all my bores and carried out a chamber impact cast on the two rifles I intend to shoot cast in so I'm sorted. I probably wont ever have to do it again unless I buy some thing new of course. Good luck with the cast boolit jobbies Adam will keep you on the right track.

Slugging the bore is easy. Measuring the slug diameter is not,unless your rifle has an even number of grooves and lands---most do not. You will see references to rotating the slug carefully in the jaw of a micrometer ---I have checked results for shooters who have done this and they have been miles out. If you have access to a lathe, chuck up a piece of scrap metal and drill a hole is it to a slightly smaller diameter than your slug appears to be. The, using a boring bar, gradually and carefully open up the hole until the slug will just enter it and is a tight / sliding fit. Then measure the diameter of the hole.

I have a lathe and all though I have never felt the need to use the method you describe if bigfathairybiker thinks it would help he is welcome to send me a bore slug and I will machine a gauge to fit it for him.

But Adam is your man what I know about cast boolit shooting can be written on the back of a postage stamp.

In the meantime I'm drawing up some diagrams for my brother to make a muzzlebrake for the Mosin. Defeats the point of having a Mosin I guess, but if you can, why not? :)

No problem when you get round to slugging the bore if you have a problem measuring it up just send me a slug Ill get it accurately measured for you I can get that done with out messing about with the lathe.

You must be on about the Mosin carbine the short barrel jobbies. Don't they have a bayonet underneath them. The muzzle is not threaded either. I'm intrigued tell me more. Post the diagrams this sounds interesting.

In titanium WHAT.

Err... Titanium metal..... My brother has quite a bit spare in large blocks and odd sizes. Need to use it up.
