OK, Chuck could have phrased it better, but you have to admit that it does seem rather foolish to say in one breath that you are running for your life, and then with the next say you are going back to where the deranged killer is. If we saw a character in a movie about to do that, we'd all be yelling at the screen "Don't do it!"

Speaking on the steps outside Guildford Crown Court, Christine Lee's daughter Stacy Banner, 38, criticised Surrey Police for returning weapons to Lowe despite her repeated warnings.

She said: "The shotgun was one of seven that had been returned to him by the police only months before he used it to kill. He held a shotgun licence despite the police being repeatedly warned by me and others about the danger he posed to society, allowing him to kill and kill again.
"The police should never have given an 82-year-old man seven shotguns back. There were hardly any animals there. *So why did he need those guns?*

** Why indeed? I ask this because I was under the impression that an applicant had to establish a bona fide need before being granted a certificate for a shotgun.

I suspect there might be some serious fall out from this for holders of Shotgun certificates along the lines of tightening the criteria for being granted a certificate to possess a Shotgun.

I also find it ironic that the national shooting center (a joke I know) is on their patch and they have come up with some strict interference at Bisley before now,this points to a dept that if anything is over cautious.....now in this case it's blind incompetence......

if I had a few million in the bank ide open this right up and use the opertunity to show up the Dunblane Hungerford nutters as being the fault of the cops too....this is the perfect opertunity to educate the public that Ryan and Hamilton were shuned by clubs knowing full well they were idiots not worthy of such trust,but as always the police think they know best....

Surrey firearms dept you only have yourselves to blame...

Perhaps she wasn't sure that her mother was dead, and was returning to see if she could help her. If that was the case then she was a very courageous woman.

I suspect you may be right. And while that may be understandable and laudable, it still doesn't make it a particularly good idea. I think was the substance of Chuck's observation.

There was quite a lengthy article on radio 4's PM programme yesterday evening about the case and our friend Squires was wheeled out! He must have been having an off day as he didn't go for the throat but did manage to get in a "guns shouldn't be in the home" rant.
Next on was the the PCC of Surrey who tried on a couple of occasions to apportion blame for the whole cluster#### on the fact that the license fee is too low! To give the interviewer his dues, this was swiftly rebutted with "well that's a discussion for another day" in fact, on the second time he tried it, the PCC was faded out mid sentence. :55:

I really wish I had enough well-placed contacts at the BBC to get Squires taken off their go-to list of "gun experts". He's about as much of an expert on the lawful use of firearms as I am on sending rockets to the moon.

Surrey's PCC seems to be an ex-Met senior rank so we can expect him to try and shift the ultimate blame onto anything and everything that isn't Surrey Police, now the three civilian FEOs have been thrown to a disciplinary inquiry. At least the BBC cut him off before he could go off on one!
