Just out of interest, is leaving a rifle out of your cabinet over night in your own home an offence?

I wouldn't make a habit of it. HO guidance says it should be secure. I would guess that once you have fallen asleep it is no longer under your control, then if there are other people in the house, asleep or not, they potentially have access to it.
If however you are barricaded at the top of the stairs, wide awake, stripper clips and spare mags to hand as hordes of zombies batter at your front door to feast on your warm, living flesh, then I'd reckon civilisation as we know it has broken down, Plod has his hands full elsewhere, and you'll be fine

Whenever I'm in bed, my rifles are locked up safe and sound, it was just a theoretical question given the comments about hotels.
If the zombies are coming, I best load up the ammo cabinet!

Thanks very much for all the tips/idea/comments it has put my mind at rest.
I'll be travelling on a Suzuki GSX1400.
The only thing about it that I suppose would attract attention would be my lack of knowledge about the throttle. As far as I know it only has three positions:- On, Off and "Blip".
"Blip" is only used at when travelling slowly and waiting at traffic lights.
I have no problems with braking down the rifle into stock, trigger block and action. Being a semi I don't think the bolt comes out that easy.
I already carry my Mosin in a slip on my back to and from the range which is only fifteen miles. And it isn't a bother at all. I thought it would be a right pain and would get in the way. Ammo I just put under the seat.
I also have found that stopping off to pop into a small shop to get some food supplies on the way gets no comments about the rifle on my back.
The excellent thing about my GSX1400 is that you can fit around 300 rounds of 54R in the space under the seat.

Mine are free to roam* during the day but when I'm out, asleep or smashed - they get caged!
* I always leave them a bowl of cleaning kit to hand.

20series wrote:We stayed in a Premier inn up at warrington for a smallborwe shoot a few years ago, we locked the rifles in the room and asked the duty manager to lock the bolts in their safe. About two hours later she came over to the pub where we were having a night cap after some grub and asked us to come back to the reception. A local officer simply said Mr C.... which rifle do you have with you so I told him and just said thanks and have a good night. It turns out that the same lady had an issue with someone refusing to pay the bill and "im going to get my gun" was muttered a few months earlier, so she had gotten jumpy and called the station.
I would just make sure that if you can you make it as safe as possible and if it's bolt action take the bolt with you if you leave.
Alan
I have... different experience of that Premierinn and rifles...

Most definitely it is.
More than a few shooters have had certificates revoked for leaving firearms unsecured and have been caught out by a chance visit by the police or have been reported by other people. If you're not actually using it lock it away.
