The larger ones come with a ball & socket head with quick release plates.

My scope weighs less than 1.4k. Do you think it is worth the extra to get the Focus?

A few quick boing pix - I'm pretty confident that this will support a typical spotting scope and that it has anough adjustment and a big-enough footprint. The legs are stiff and can support the weight. The Gorillapod shown above is the SLR-Zoom model

BTW - the SLR-Zoom model (above) is rated to 3kg and the Focus to 5kg.

See my post above - I'd say no need, get the SLR-Focus rated to 3kg.

Thank you for posting the pictures. I'm going to get one and give it a try.

I was just about to order one but changed my mind. Instead, I ordered one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mcoplus-Camera- ... pd_cp_ph_3 . When I tried fitting the scope on our tripod, I found the most wobbly was the head and I recon a ballhead that can handle 8 kilos should do the trick. I also ordered a 300mm length of 7/8” aluminum bar. I have a base from a mic stand from my musician days, which is pretty sturdy. I’ll put a thread on the one end of the bar to attach the ballhead to, pop the bar in the mic stand base, and I hope Bob will be my uncle. Less than £30.

Just in case anyone does consider the Gorillapod SLR-Zoom for mounting a spotting scope ... ...

My Vortex Diamondback 20-60x80 scope arrived this morning. I have just tried it on the Gorillpod which supports it very happily. The Vortex scope weighs 1.34kg but clearly the Gorillpod will take more weight (3kg claimed).
