Thin end of a dangerous wedge, oomans. We agree with the running man and the fat rat: we pay for policing through taxation and do not benefit as individual shooters from the licence, hence it should scrapped. If we buy a fishing licence, the waterways are maintained for us. If we buy a TV Licence we are provided with entertainment (reportedly). The police provide nothing of benefit to us for the cost of our licence.

I'd be interested to see how much the Fishing Licence brings in compared to the cost of maintaining the waterways. I worked for the Environment Agency last year and they had several, very expensive systems in place to monitor river levels, fishing licence database, fish levels etc. I reckon fishing is much more heavily subsidised than shooting.
I still don't understand how they could calculate the cost. The firearms staff are salaried, not paid per form they deal with, and would probably be around, if we didn't need licences, in some other capacity. They're s standing cost to the force and should be providing more services than dealing with firearms licensing.
There are also no costs to the police associated with the checks they need to perform, as they're using their own databases!
I'd pay for the petrol for the visit if I had to but that's it, we've already paid for the rest.

No, ooman, no. Not even the petrol. Do you pay for petrol if they turn up to investigate a burglary ? Do you pay the Fire Brigade for a few gallons of water ? The ambulancemen for scraping you up off the kerb and a bit of sticking plaster ?

I dunno Badger, I assumed they'd turn up with a wireless bank-card reader?

The Chancellor takes it from you up-front, whether you need the service or not.

don't confuse expenses incurred during their core business of providing drinking water quality and sewage disposal services, as well as controlling the flow and condition of water in waterways etc with the extra work which the water companies provide to fisherman in the form of restocking, disease prevention/treatment of fish stocks etc (paid for by the licence fee to some degree or other) FAC holders don't actually get much in the way of help from the FAC charge, if anything it pays for the imposition of more controls and restrictions.

Today was the first time I have listened to Radio 2 since my parents made me listen as a child other than a couple of years ago when someone at work suggested it might be more my type of music than Radio 1 - I listened for 5 minutes until they played Glen Campbell singing a Foo Fighters song - argggghhhhhh!
Anyway heard this heap of garbage today due to a long car journey and not knowing how to change the station.
The DJ was a self opinionated
ignorant tit!
Not going to listen to Radio 2 again - ever!

Nah - they can become community support occifers/traffic wardens: the fresh air will do them good - and think of the HONEST revenue they'd raise from parking tickets instead
