Not sure of the Fire Control Methods used today, although I'm sure it must be very good, what with all the GPS stuff we have.
But, in the 1960s we were still using WW2 methods. Full details....
One day around 1964 we were on Salisbury Plains with four 25Pdrs. The 19 set crackled Smoke Shoot Grid Ref 123 456. height xxx . My job in the command post was to work out fire data. So, I applied the Grid Ref. to my Artillery Board drew a line and measured four bearing and ranges, then applied the various corrections for height, correction of the moment etc. and the GPO issued the details to the guns. If I remember a smoke shoot order was' Two rounds gunfire followed by four rounds gunfire four zero seconds' to get a good smoke screen.
What I didn't know was I had used the wrong starting point, (my board had a lot of pencil marks), so, a minute later from the OP " Where's is our smoke screen?"
Then I noticed my mistake
So! 20 smoke shells were fired in the wrong place, where they landed nobody knew.
No wonder Jenks calls me 'Dropshort' :lol:

It seems as though the farmer did not actually "complain". He made the Army aware of the occurrence and got an apology which was all he wanted. It is now down to te press who are expanding it out of all proportion.
Network Rail are whinging that they were not '... alerted "before or after" the incident ...' Well why should they? It landed 300m away from the tracks and it would be damn difficult to notify them before.
