I'd doubt you'd find a 5-40 UNC at your local hardware store Gaz. Tapered M3.5 are used to hold electrical sockets onto backing boxes though so if they fit and you can't find anything better I'll bring my bodging ahhh fettling kit along on Sat.

Stick "5-40unc" in to a popular auction site and you'll get all manner of hits, pick the one you like the most.

All UNC screws are getting difficult to get hold of now (not as bad as BSF thou!) Best places to try are old fashioned engineering works or places that restore/tinker with old British machinery. Failing that, I reckon Fultons would be able to locate something if they feel inclined to have a rummage in their dusty old drawers!
There are some here http://www.modelfixings.co.uk/unc_cap_screws.htm-about half way down the page. Sods law is that the thread wont be long enough so you might want to buy a couple of screws and a die nut from Eb@y and have a play. Check out a chap called 'enfieldlock' on there as well.

I've had success with Modelfixings too. Another one that often comes up with the goods and is close to Bisley is AHC in Camberley. They have a great selection and I've been in there many times with bits of a gun asking for a screw to fit such and such. Always very helpful.

No, my brilliant Swiss-engineered stock hasn't given me any trouble. It's usually the British-made stuff that's attached to it that causes the problems (NO I DO NOT MEAN THE SHOOTER!).
