IMO a geek is someone who is particularly interested in a subject, any subject. Maths geek, gun geek, bike geek etc.
A nerd is a generally more "nerdy person", awkward, probably intelligent, maybe physically feeble :D

Shooting does appear to attract a higher % of geek/nerd than other 'sports' - but then is it really a sport if you don't sweat? (Oh yes, i WENT there! )

That said i know plenty of 'men's men' that shoot, however they usually have minimal knowledge of the guns they're using and little to know knowledge about the legislation, history and other aspects other than pulling a trigger.

I have noticed quite a strong correlation between disinterest in football and interest in shooting though.

EDIT: I'm a gun geek BTW and i think its nature, rather than nuture

EDIT EDIT:

I'd say using this guide, most are geeks, rather than nerds;

So far it seems we have a lot of nerds/geeks who selected shooting. Maybe we could run a practical experiment. First we need a laddish football fan. I'll kidnap him and take him to the next NRA open day. After that monitor his progress. If he starts asking about ballistic coefficients within 12 months then we have undeniable proof that shooting is the new "smart drug"..

You need to be more specific. It's rifle shooting that attracts nerds/geeks. Not pistol or shotgun.

Football does seem to have it's shooting fans however it seems to be from very specific disciplines. Yes, I know this is a generalisation however it seems to hold true with the shooting disciplines which are less deliberate or allow less time for the competition.

What I've noticed over the years..

My normal club in Bristol, most of the members are/were of some skilled profession either engineers, builders. Of course there those from other backgrounds, but they tend to make up the numbers.

The university club, we have a greater variation, but there is a considerable interest from Physics students, Computer Science students and History. The physics and history remains, to me, somewhat unsurprising.

A new category.. Passionate daffodil munchers.. Another niche one I fear!
on the different disciplines, I think they are all nerdy. Some just hide it well. I'll bet when the practical shotgun crew get behind closed doors they don thick glasses and pacamacs.. Closet nerds!

I'm defo a geek, 1&1/2hnd's (couldnt decide what subjects to choice so I did a whole extra years) in electronics and comms. Been tinkering with electonics since i was a 2 or 3 year old. Also into metal bashing. Got lathe etc in man kennel as well as electronics workshop! Built loads of cars . And things like chemistry. Instruments - science stuff not the things that make a noise. Also used to do alot of outdoor persuits with scouts. So shooting must be nature.
Dont like football, boring watching it.

Ps also restored several houses include present one with wifey.

Regards
Fred
