I'm a big fan of the 7x57, my Boer Mauser is like a fecking laser.

Used to be a very popular red deer cartridge in Sutherland an Caithness.

Good .284 bullets out there and the 7x57 case is more than adequate for 1000 yrd velocities.

and of historical note too ! Seems like a straight fight between 7x57 and 7 -08

+1 on that - I'm delighted with my Tikka T3 in 7mm-08
I also have a Sako Rihiimak in 7x33 which I love and a Sako Finnbear in 7mm Rem Mag also a fabulous round.
Three of the best and hard to beat.

Delighted to hear it.
BTW there are some excellent boolit moulds for the 7mm that make for cheap shooting although in your case paw loading is a problem, is it not?

We're slowly coming round to the idea of paw loading. We're just wondering what would be better for us now, a 7x57 or the 7-08. The 7x57 gives us access to some historical rifles, the 7-08 to some more modern bits of kit

I'd go for the 7-08 and get something new and shiny with loads of glass on top to shoot it in.

You don't want to be faffing on with all those old fashioned, out of date, boring old blued and walnut multiple hand, fit for scrap old guns, with those primitive sights that won't shoot sh!te. Buy new and bespoke and let all those rust sticks just die, they are just not worth the effort. Its the 21st century FFS, get with the post modern pogrom and buy up to date kit which is far superior to all those old guns that went before and trash anything more than a month old.

*Looks forlornly at cabinet full of pre-1919 rifles*

You sure, Dromia ? Won't that cause kittens to die or something ?
