Lot of it about, there are some RFD's/gunsmiths doing it in this country on an industrial scale.

Still the market supports them and the punters seem happy with the fakes sold as real, that is post modern attitudes for you.

Deactivated by Alfred J Parker in 2004?? Something about that doesn't ring true.

I think deactivation should be made a hanging offence in 99% of cases, but what about those rifles that are no longer safe to fire, e.g. from excessive headspace?

I don't object deactivation for interesting and unobtainable weapons, for instance, how else can you include examples of the Bren, Sterling, MP40 etc or other interesting historical firearms in your collection?

I do strongly object to obtainable, very good Sec 1 weapons being chopped, for instance, No4 barrels are currently very difficult to obtain, yet World Wide Arms, bought a large batch of virtually unused, Long Branch manufactured No4 mk1*'s.....and deactivated the lot....what a waste!

Providing they are old spec deacs (Strippable with working parts) they are still relevant for collectors/study/instruction purposes and in many cases make excellent investment pieces!

They do indeed vary in the quality of deactivation craftsmanship though, from beautifully engineered........to blacksmith!

With regard to reactivating firearms (say the SMLE in question) it's possible with some 1980's deacs, but quite impossible today, this is the latest BA rifle spec:

Barrel, slotted through most of its length, continuing through receiver ring. (slot to be of equal size to caliber) overbored and steel rod welded in.

Steel pins welded into chamber and barrel permanently fixed to receiver ring.

Receiver, weakened in critical areas to render it unserviceable

Bolt head cut back (pin hole welded up) and firing pin cut, firing pin hole in cocking piece welded to prevent removal of pin.

Locking lugs on bolt body cut back.

We made a similar comment to the West Mercia Plod Firearms Licensing Manager when he continually referred to weapons during a conversation we had with him. He insists that all 120,000 firearms on his register are weapons and are used as such every day...

West Mercia, must be an ultra violent county :)

I broke my own cardinal rule on that one......Never use the word weapon when referring to firearms.....quite right too!

I had many opportunities to De-ac on Op Granby, but it was not worth the hassle and what to do with it then??

If I hung a rifle on the wall I think I would need it surgically removed
