We also need information on downloading 7.62R to shut those nasty M44s up.

It does more than scares the cows
It scares the bull

I do not pretend to be any sort of an authority on reloading, but it is my misfortune to have to investigate the failures, and I do know quite a bit about technical investigations.
Before you start downloading any rifle cartridge, please consider the effect of presenting a large powder surface to the primer flash. This is a critical factor in a current NRA investigation.

Iain, has this ever been proven? I know it is oft discussed however I have never read any conclusive reports.

I've heard a lot about this low charge idea but it sounds like it would be really easy to replicate if it was true but as yet I've never seen any proof other than speculation ?

Here we go again SEE secondary explosion effect.
Once more I refer you to Prof Brownell's research.

Using fast pistol powders in rifle cases for reduced loads is not a cause of SEE!!!!
jjvc has given you the standard loading as per Harris and Mattern and it just plain works, Trailboss works fine but at over £50 a lb you must have more money than sense, twice amount at almost twice the price.

Agreed but if you are only using 10gr in a down loaded cartridge it works out at about 7p per load compared to around 14p when using TR140 with a full load of 40gr +

After looking at the links you posted there it also raises the question of using cast bullets which I hadn't considered either sign01

Compare that to 4 gns of N310 a 1.6p per load.

sign01 just when I thought 'd settled on a powder to try
What sort of % fill would the vit give in a 308 case?
Also looking at other threads on down loads some people are drilling out flash holes, is this necessary?

No, use the correct powder and there's no need to. N140 is not suitable for downloaded 308s!.
As Dromia says, a fast pistol powder is ideal, I used TiteGroup and Trail Boss in 308 subsonics then switched to N310, much better results and a lot cheaper!.
Current loads are 4.9gr in .308 and 3.4gr in 300 Blackout, both using 115gr cast boolits. Both loads run around 980fps and are very accurate at 25m.
