And these people think the fact I enjoy pistol/rifle shooting makes me unfit to have an FAC+ guns...

Hauptman, the quote you meant was " The unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable" . It was made at a hunting dinner as a witticism.
Obviously, you think we should all consume the rats, magpies, mice, crows etc that we kill and treat as sport in doing so?
Deep down inside, I really cry when one of the terriers legally kills a rat.
Of course, I only wear my tweeds as well.
Shooting is really safe with your attitude.
Now I may not enjoy doing what you legally enjoy, but as Voltaire said " I do not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"
Will you?

I personally wont, because the tweeds don't extend the same principles to me.
Most would like to see all 3 of the guns I currently owned banned because they mostly believe I'm a "Cowboy who often brings there sport into disrepute"
I don't think you should eat everything you kill unlike the other poster. I think dog hunting is retarded, but don't think it should be illegal. but they were in many cases supportive of the 88+97 acts.

I am glad to read you do not support the ban.
I am not in favour of banning anything that is currently legal.
I spent a lot of time, money and energy standing up for what was dear to me.
I would dearly love to not have to fight anymore, but if the cause is just, then so be it.
I would only advise that you do more good by making friends than enemies.
As an ex hunt terrierman and keen coursing man, as well as being an ex pistol shooter, I do understand prejudice.
And I still wear tweed.
I have heard more bollox spoken by those supposedly sharing the same field as me, than you would credit.
Be they MFH, "professional" 'keeper or target shooter, ignorance and prejudice has no boundaries.

I think these are the operative words in what H/Man said - I recognise the need for pest control at times (whether it be fox, squirrel, badger, rabbit or rat), but do think that some amateur smallholders could make more effort about security and waste before blaming anyone else...and I really do question the motives of those who actively seek out more and more permissions so that they can make 'pest control' a weekend hobby...

Why should their motives matter if they enjoy what they do and are not doing anybody harm? They are providing a service for free that the farmer or whomever would otherwise have to pay for. Woodpigeons and rabbits can be eaten, so a clear motive there - cull a pest at the same time as putting food on their own table. Foxes, magpies and other stuff that can't be eaten, see above, culling a pest.
I cannot see the point of golf but I don't question golfers' motives.

And that's why we'll probably have to agree to disagree...because I include, to some degree, animals in 'anybody'...

...don't get me wrong, I know my place in the food chain, but believe in quite a lot of rights for other animals.

And how far do we take those rights. Not to endure unnecessary suffering, which I agree with, or the right to destroy a farmer's crop or eat all his chickens, so taking away his right to earn a living?
And do we only apply those rights to cuddly animals? What about the right of the mosquito to give a child malaria?
Or suppose a bear felt he had the right to rip off your head and eat you, depriving you of your right to life. What would your position in the food chain be then? And if you had a gun?
