Too hard an alloy will not cause the boolits to be inaccurate in itself. It is poor bullet fit that causes the poor grouping, a hard alloy may contribute to this by not obturating like a softer alloy would to help compensate for poor boolit fit.

Always check your boolit fit in the first instance with cast boolits, undersized boolits are the main cause of most cast boolit issues from poor accuracy to leading.

Every handloader who aspires to getting the best from their guns whether cast boolit or condom should know the throat, groove and bore dimesions of their barrels as this is the context in which we buy and seat our boolits/bullets. Without that knowledge you are just guessing.

Problem solved I had a session with Dodgyrog at the club using some of his boolits.
The stuff I got from Hannams will be melted down and used for some thing else. My own cast semi wad cutters grouped about the same as Dodgyrog,s but I don't have time to spend casting at the moment so I have placed a order with Rog.

And the problem was?

Got to be the overly hard GM boolits I suspect!

Don't know what the problem was all I know is using Rog,s boolits and my own semi wad cutters things were better. So a box of Rog,s boolits is the cure and the Hannam boolits go to the back of the shelf.
I also suspect on reflection that the nut on the but may have been a contributing factor. This exercise has finally rammed it home to me the truth is I can not see well enough with my right eye to use iron sights any more including peep sights. So I either sell the Winchester or even though it is totally against my principles put a scope on it.
(All though I am not sure if it actually came to it I could bolt one on it. Scopes do NOT belong on under levers.)
I will have to have another consultation with my friendly optician all though I suspect he has done all he can.

I understand your reservations about putting a scope on a lever action - I had/have them too but my scores have improved with one...

...also, if you do go down that road you don't have to get rid of the Winny - the AE literally does eject at an angle, so as long as you don't put a rail across the top of the action they should eject OK (maybe a few would bounce off the underside of the scope, but no matter).

Absolutely no problems with putting a scope on a Winchester AE - they are drilled and tapped for bases.

Were would you get the bases.
