I can shorten them however I am wary of threading barrels on Shotguns as it is not something I have ever tried.

Ovenpaa,

What is your view as rfd on taking a section 1 barrel of 27", shortening to 20.5" and permanently ( pin ? ) attach a 4" brake to bring it back up to 24.5" ?

...a pin through the barrel could be seen as a weakening of the integrity, so you'd possibly have to submit to re-proof.

The brake is a clamp type. Would putting a blob of weld on each end of the bolt be considered permanent I wonder ?

It can be done and as long as the brake is permanently attached and then Proved it should not be a problem. There are many Mossberg 500's which are effectively in this configuration albeit with a choke.
