Yes, it was a typo
It is a 7,92x57 or in CIP terms the 8mmx57 and in fact the emails I have from my contact all refer to it as the 8x57JS given the age the first thing to do is slug the bore and find out which of the 3-4 '8mm' diameter bullets available is most suitable.

The scope supports the view that the rifle is mid-20s. It is of a pattern made in volume between 1920 and 1938 or so.

Thanks for that Fred, despite the stamps on the receiver this looks to be the later Mauser action which came about around 1920 so early 20's is sounding about right however if anyone can tell any more based on the additional images I would be grateful.
Some more pictures including the 7.7 which has mm after it.

Look at the detailing on the receiver as well. I wonder how much it would cost to have that level of craftmanship performed on a rifle these day?

You can buy a virtually identical rifle new from a company in Germany, they are truly master gun makers and the standard of engraving and finish is superb, I will try and find a link.

Beautiful rifle, that is a sporter you do not see in the states everyday so to speak, if ever. What type scope is on that rifle looks very vintage?
The 8x57JS the common 8mm Mauser, we remember it as 8x57JS 'just shoot'

Beautiful rifle! As a very young man I worked part time in a gun shop owned by a WW2 combat veteran and black belt karate master who traveled to the UK frequently to buy firearms at fire sale prices at auction. This was in the early to mid 70s and he brought back many beautiful firearms. One of them that he brought back was a pre-war commercial Mauser rifle with the double square bridge magnum action receiver. It had been built up by Chas. Lancaster as a safari rifle with express sights and a locking lever on the magazine floorplate so that all the rounds wouldn't dump onto the ground when fired. It was chambered for .280 Ross with polygonal rifling that looked like it was shot out but wasn't. He sold it to me for $75 and after playing with it for a year and day-dreaming of Indian safaris I sold it for $135 and thought myself clever for having almost doubled my money on it! I think it would sell north of $5k these days!
