As a grizzled old campaigner...I too served my "prone apprenticeship" with club rifles and kit and agree with everything 1066 said.
Thing is, if you can shoot consistently with a borrowed rifle, sling and shooting jacket that everyone else uses....you have cracked it!
That's the point to go buy your own rifle and kit, I know it's different today, but the principles are the same...you have to put the hard yards in to get the results.
