Scope Advice

This seems typical of the type of ill informed response given on here, which incidentally does nothing to help the OP who has a clear requirement. Those who are placing highly in gallery rifle smallbore tend to be using high magnification nowadays, there are exceptions of course but the trend is towards 18-24x. I use my scope at maximum (20x) at 25m and never below 8x at 10m, and have done so with some success.

As regards the budget. A Swarovski would be nice but won't parallax down to 10m at high mag so is as good as useless for what we use them for. We aren't shooting game at dawn/dusk, we're trying to place a shot in a 25mm X-Ring. Repeatability of adjustment and short range focus are the key concerns. You'll find that most people are using scopes designed for air rifles and these tend to be at the lower end of the budget scale anyway.

I feel it's also pertinent to mention, due to the underlying tone of many of the responses, that the OP has experience of Swarovski, Schmidt and Bender and Nightforce so is well aware of the difference.

I'm following the thread as I'm also after a higher magnification scope to have a dabble at .22 long range shooting with my Anschutz 54 - The reason for the higher magnification is so that I can see the holes at 100 yards...makes zeroing and practicing a lot more practicle.

I've seen a 'BSA Sweet Scope 8-32x44' on Amazon for £70 - From the comments (and my own limited scope experience), I find it hard to believe that the scope, at that money, will be any good (focusing both reticule and target) at the higher magnifications....anyone know this scope of have an opinion on it?

Dougan, if you can, I'd stretch to one of Brian Fox's Scopes which I think are about £100. I used a 10-40 on my old BSA Target Rifle for exactly the same thing you want to. The glass isn't the greatest but they hold a zero, have target turrets that offer repeatable adjustment, and are more than clear enough to see holes at 100m. I think there's a topic on here about them.

Thanks Cormie - I've had a look at the fox scopes; I'll give him a call for prices...I think it'll be slightly over my budget, but probably the best high mag scope I'll get for that kind of money.

Btw: The BSA Sweet scope I was looking at was on a link from another site and showed prices in Dollars ($120) on Amazon...but when you search for the same scope on UK Amazon, it is considerably more ( :roll: )...I thought it was too good to be true...

Aye, that'll be a variable scope with max mag of 24, suitable for interior ranges - no doubt fluorescent lit, able to count the hairs on a fly's bollox and all for less than the price of a round at the pub.

Yes a variable. Never used indoors. No requirement for that kind of clarity. Repeatability of adjustment and short range parallax are more important than good glass in our game, one which you obviously know very little about.

I use a Japanese Optimate 5-20, but these are like hens teeth at the moment. They can be had for around £150. You're welcome to look up my results with it.

As your more interested in pi**ing competitions, than in giving helpful advice, I'll leave that bit to you. Let me know how you get on.

Allow me to point the OP here MTC Viper Ok it might be outside his original budget but he will eventually learn that he can have cheap OR good. I have the 24x on a .22 for 50m club competition and yes you can see the holes.
Many years ago I was told the old adage spend the money on the "glass" and the change on the rifle. After wasting money on cheap scopes I have realised the truth of that statement. The MTC is probably the cheapest scope I own. I currently have on my CZ452 a Leupold scope worth three times the price of the rifle but it was "spare" having come off another rifle and again it's for another type of 50m club competition.

Ok advice given.

I have a Bushnell trophy on my Rimfire that I'm happy with. Very bright for a 100 quid scope!
