Whoaah, hang about. Let's not get the pitch forks sharpened just yet! Yes, I'm BASC and yes I will be asking them to 'assist' - but only in the event that I am in fact knocked back on the strength of mag qty (or indeed on the strength of non-restricted parts at all). If they say they'll grant but only if I reduce my mag qty then I will go straight to BASC, you can count on it. Just flagging this up for interest's sake. One for the radar, so to speak.

I suspect it's simply a (gross) misunderstanding on the part of the civil servant - my FEO was rolling his eyes as much as I was! We'll sort it. tongueout

@Sim correct.

Some hard-of-thinking idiot's been spending too much time reading the American press and not enough time learning UK law.

I'm sorry they should know the rules, not make them up out of misunderstanding or any other reason!

You are a law abiding private individual, to have the FAC you have to be, how many unreportable items you own is your business. They are Public Servants, it is for them to justify why they ask the question in the first place. They give no quarter, don't expect any!

This is not about any relationship you have with the FLO that is personal to you both. This is about process and introducing steps or interpretations unjustifiably and at random which could effect all UK Shooters. Its these little things that go un-noticed or un-challenged that chip away constantly at all our rights!

Why did you mention magazines on your application? I don't recall seeing a box for such an item, and AFAIK, they can be purchased without the seller having to see an FAC.

Ask them to clarify the section of firearm law that relates to the maximum number of magazines that you can possess for each gun. That should keep them quiet

Would I be right in thinking that the situation is different in Northern Ireland and that you are required to supply proof of proposed purchase with a firearm prior to actually receiving your certificate so that you can collect it, or is that the situation in the South?

If it is it shows the need for discretion with the information supplied and to only supply what is required perhaps even getting the dealer to blank out certain information or supply seperate receipts. I know that my local RFD blanks out such things as the price paid on the police copy of the receipt as that is none of their business, it's between him and me.

Yes, in NI you 'buy before you apply'. In many ways it's a s*** system but at least you can buy on impulse without having to have a 'spare slot' available.

I don't think this 'overstretch of remit' will ultimately prejudice my application but if it does then I guess my BASC membership will be paying for itself soon enough. :grin:
