You are only shooting to 600 yards I assume?

Try a jump of .020" to .012" moving longer in .003" steps. Very few bullets benefit from jamming other than Berger VLD's which seem to work either jammed a few thou or jumped quite a way. Have you considered using Lapua 155 Scenars? Still an approachable price and more suited to 600-1000 yards. The SMK 2156's are OK as well however at some stage you may wish to sort them.

I'm proud to say that I got one of the first SHED gauges  - It taught me that it's not necessary for the rifles I have ( ), but is uber-solid, so will get more use out of it in the future...

...what was most handy, were all the comparitor bits and bobs that came with it - I'm a total convert to measuring OAL and seating depth from the ogive... it's especially useful for when I'm using cheap bullets for practice, where there's a big variation at the pointy end :good:

Ovenpaa: As I've done a bit of 'promotion'...any chance of sending me a SHED sticker for the gauge? razz

No worries.

I am not convinced about this measuring from the ogive looking at the numbers I am getting.

Don't go away I have more questions.

I have set up a excel spread sheet and I am running the numbers.
I have some 155grain A max and various other bullets in different weights I am going to do some research I need more data.

The various regular (only use SMKs for best) .303 bullets I've used can be up to 20 thou difference when measuring OAL from the meplat - so I find I get a more consistent neck retention measuring from the ogive...

...although I've no experience of measuring a minimal jump (20 - 10 thou, or less)...it is the ogive that contacts first with the rifling; so must be the most important measurement...

Every measurement I have taken up to now to the ogive is different there is no consistency so how can you use these measurements unless you take a average of them.?

I don't get it - surely measuring a cartridge with Hornady, SHED, Davidson or Sinclair comparators or an RCBS Mic measures from case head to ogive, while the Dolphin gauge measures the cartridge from shoulder to Ogive??? Has the thread switched to talking about measuring chambers now rather than cartridges?

Rox, the measurement is taken from case head to ogive and the datum used is (dependant on case fit) the shoulder.
