True, if the bolt had been the original one.

When the German Mauser rifles were captured by the Russians the Russians removed the bolts to make them unusable if they were captured back by the Germans, the original bolts would have been destroyed or hidden. Then when the Russians invaded Germany they took over most if not all the Mauser factories and stocks of weapon parts ie new un issued bolts. These would have been through the manufacturing stages hence the inspectors stamps but No serial numbers. The Russians then electro penciled the serial number to match the rifle, before being put into storeage.
You now have a Russian capture rifle with a un matched bolt, now worth less value as well IMHO.

So the rifle has lost a bit of its history and some of its value.

A Russian matched bolt no longer has the proof of its matching, it has now become a Russian capture rifle with a bitser bolt.

Every rifle has a story and this one has entered a new chapter.

Your making me feel bad, well not really I've bough it to shoot and to that end will satisfy me. Finally one more question can you suggest any particular make of ammo for it. I use PP in my SMLE and find that okay. I do have some surplus 7.92 which I will be using first.

Nowt wrong with cheap surplus, I get cracking results out to 800yds with mine.

Was actually due to go down to Bisley yesterday with the club but it got cancelled due to expected adverse weather. My 800yds, with my eyesight I will be happy to get a decent grouping at 200yds.
I suppose I could "buggar" it up a bit more and drill the receiver for a scope :lol:

I shot Dirtbags Kar98 at 1000m/1100 yards with 1950's milsurp at a 4' frame and certainly frightened it. Outstanding really given my eyes.

At 1100yds I'd think I was doing well to see the target never mind be able to hit it.

The targets get larger as the distance increases so the sight picture remains pretty constant.
