It isn't really a recoil buffer, the buffer is there to prevent bolt bounce, Bolt bounce is caused by the bolt literally bouncing back from the full closed position and therefore being slightly out of battery when the hammer falls.

The recoil buffer is what resets/'cycles' the bolt into the closed position, if it wasn't there the bolt would be completely 'dead' and you'd have to manually push it closed like a bolt action

And the buffer tube is needed to hang of a stock off.......
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Without the buffer tube, the bolt wouldn't have anywhere to go when it's cocked...

As for stocks. I like my VLTOR Imod, it's slim and light but offers more cheek weld than some.
