Another vote for the Sordin - I also have moulded in ear electronic ones - but only tend to use these now when shooting walked up game.

I'm considering those moulded in the ear electronic ones,which ones do you have? the price put me off a little on the ones i saw?

I have some Ultimate Ear protectors which are moulded to the shape of my ear, I had them for my motorbike, the wind noise in the crash helmet can be damaging over long periods, and they made me a set of shooters ear protectors with the same moulds. I can hear normal conversation ok, not as good as the electronic protectors I suspect, but the sudden noise of gunshots is shut off.

They seem to work well, and I find them a lot more comfortable than the full ear muffs which clout on the stock and knock the frame of my glasses.

I actually have 2 sets - the CENS ones were very expensive - but then I only have one lot of hearing - but they are actually not as comfortable to wear as the ones I got made and fitted by Specsavers - yes that is right, specsavers!! - most branches now have a Hearing Centre in store - well worth the money from them - about £100 all in.

electronic ones ? at specsavers? really?

I bought a set of these a while ago and they are excellent. Much better than the "cheap" electronic ear defenders you can get from most industrial suppliers etc, and these typically retail at around the £90-100 mark in this country.

Howard Leight electronic muffs are what I have been using for several years. $40-$80 depending upon the shop.

Disposable foam ear plugs work great also.
Federal Health and Safety approved for over 84db required hearing protection in industrial areas, and are good enough to prevent hearing loss law suits.
If the insurance companies like them, they cant be bad.

Foam ear plugs are all well and good but people new to shooting should be aware that the sound from a gun goes through the skull in the area of the ear as well as directly into the ear drum itself. So, it's advisable to get cans as they offer much enhanced protection over simple foam plugs.

Got the Sordins too and also sgree that the foam plugs really son't protect your hearing for close gun fire

I'm beginning to believe this now too. So far my in ear protectors have done me well, shotgun and rifle outside, no real problems. Today I was at the NRA SC visit to the BSRC, which have some very civilised covered facilities. I can see that winter shooting for them is a whole lot more pleasant than Short Siberia can be. But the noise is incredible, it bounces back off the roof, and I could sense that it was way too loud. I had a bit of low frequency tinnitus when I got home, never had that before.

I think on my next visit there I will wear the ear muff type protection as well.
